The first bestseller in the New York Times list in 2007, water for elephants was the third novel of Sara Gruen. The other award won by the book is 2007 Book Sense of the Year Award and the ALA Alex Award. This novel is inspired with the story of a photographer who followed a travelling circus in America when the country was deep in the clutch of the Great Depression. The time setting itself reveal a mood of uncertainty. By 1930-an, America was a country much lowered in the economic terms due to the excessive capital flooding in the stock market. Such uncertainty, plus rich exploration of the characters and events, makes the novel a literary masterpiece.

The water for elephants is opened with Jacob Jankowski, a 93 year old man who lived in a retirement house, recollected his past. He found from memory the events that defined his own life. At 23 years old, Jacob had had finished the veterinarian degree for Cornell. He planned to follow his father’s career in developing the family business. However, his parents were then died of accident so that he had to manage himself to make a living and a career. After decided to walk out from his exam, he hoped into a train which turn to be a special train for the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. This is a travelling circus. Jacob worked in the group as a veterinarian. Being a part of a travelling circus, Jacob known almost every aspect of the circus life, from the way a low employee like him had to sleep among the horse and never had a guarantee in terms of money, to the skill of human being who could masked his or her true nature. Jacob eventually fell in love with a girl named Marlena, which turn to be the wife of his superior, August. While animal life in the circus group is also explored, the most entertaining part should be the love story of Jacob and his girlfriend.

Water for elephants is full of cruelty to animals so that animal lovers should be prepared enough when reading this book. However, it is Gruen’s compelling style that makes reading the book is such a literary experience. Suspense is best applied in the narrative, along with the clear depiction of details. The lesson from this novel is that life is full of turn and twist, unexpected events and struggle to make a change for the better future.
