Opened with the story of Jacob’s life during great depression in orphanage house, Water for Elephants novel brings its readers to Jacob’s running off with a circus, to Jacobs’ story telling about his life around seventy years later. In fact before writing her great novel about circus, Sara Gruen had made extensive research about circuses and animal behavior and some even based on her true story while working with the circus herself. The manifestation of her careful work is displayed clearly in her writing, which is strongly descriptive and very easy to read. Many readers feel that they were part of circus game and community with the senses that Sara Gruen engages such as the train whistle and the moonshine burn.
It is interesting that although most readers like water for elephants, they admit that they love and hate many characters in the story as well. In fact it is not possible for the readers for not becoming attached to the main characters of the story such as Jacob, Bobo, Walter, Marlena and Rosie. What makes the book rich and real is because the older Jacob’s character gives a depth and poignancy to the story. As the movie version of Water for Elephants is coming, there is a strong believe that the selling of this novel will increase significantly.
